Lincoln Square Neighborhood Center (LSNC) seeks an Executive Director with the vision to build on the legacy of our beloved Stephanie Pinder who passed away unexpectedly in December 2009. We seek a dynamic leader who will continue to expand the depth and breadth of services provided to our Community and lead LSNC into a new phase of sustainable growth and visibility. Leading a committed board/staff team, the successful candidate is a proven leader and advocate and will be familiar with the specific issues and needs of our community but within the larger social justice framework. The ED is responsible for ensuring the organization’s consistent achievement of its mission and financial objectives.  S/he has primary responsibility for planning and development, fundraising, financial management, external relations (community, media, government, funders), program development, and advocacy.  The Executive Director will build strong community alliances and will sustain a client-sensitive work environment. Working with the Board of Directors, the ED will ensure that the organization’s services and initiatives respond to the needs of the clients and community we serve.

About the Organization:

The Lincoln Square Neighborhood Center (LSNC) was established in 1949 to meet the social, educational, recreational and cultural needs of people of the west side, particularly the residents of the Amsterdam Houses and the addition which comprises 14 buildings spanning 61st to 65th streets and Amsterdam to West End Avenues.  It accomplishes its mission through three core programs in Youth Services, Day Care Services and Senior Services.  Additionally, LSNC engages in community outreach and advocacy.  Currently each year the Center serves more than 2,700 individuals and 1,250 families who live and work in the community.  Since 1999, the Center has significantly expanded its programs, funding and reach.  Its most current strategic plan calls for additional investments in critical programmatic and institutional initiatives.

GENERAL DUTIES:

The Executive Director shares LSNC’s overall commitment to individual and community empowerment and development and LSNC’s mission to meet the social, educational, recreational and cultural needs of people of the west side, particularly the residents of the Amsterdam Houses.  The Executive Director has principal responsibility for implementing LSNC’s strategic plan and ensures that LSNC’s strategic initiatives are consistently informed and responsive by staying aware of key trends, needs and issues in the field.

A significant portion of the Executive Director’s time involves relationship building with current and potential individual and institutional partners who can inform and augment LSNC’s work and activities.  The Executive Director has prime responsibility to formulate and implement LSNC’s fund development strategy.   

The Executive Director is responsible for the overall leadership and the day-to-day management of the Center.  In addition to the key responsibilities of fund development and grant-maker and stakeholder relationship building, this includes providing overall oversight of institutional development; senior staff supervision and review; public representation of the LSNC; fiscal management; and Board management.  

In carrying out his/her work, the Executive Director facilitates and coordinates the activities of a dynamic group of Board and staff. The Executive Director reports to LSNC’s Board of Directors and communicates regularly with its President and Executive Committee of the Board.  LSNC’s Executive Director operates in a highly collaborative manner, uniting staff, Board members, community stakeholders and partners to advance the vision and work of the organization.

The following positions report directly to the Executive Director:  the Associate Director who manages program, human resources, facilities and program evaluation; the Fiscal Officer who provides financial management and reporting; the Development Coordinator who staffs fund development activities; and the Coordinator of Technology services.   

SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Fundraise for yearly and three-year budget plans (currently $2.2 million per year);

• Reach out to, and build relationships with, new funders and community partners;

• Assess the needs and emerging issues of community residents;

• Lead ongoing efforts to implement LSNC’s strategic plan, and to realign as needed, LSNC’s strategic interests with needs and issues emerging from the field (with Board and staff);

• Continually seek opportunities to raise the profile of LSNC and position the Center as an expert and key resource on the west side;

• Act as the public face of the LSNC, speaking at meetings and conferences about LSNC’s work and issues on the Westside of Manhattan and representing LSNC with key organizations and affinity groups;

• Engage in Board recruitment, development and management, in conjunction with Board members and the Board’s President;

• Provide fiscal management and budget oversight;

• Provide oversight for the development and integration of technology services;

• Supervise and support senior staff and lead the management team. 

KEY QUALIFICATIONS:

• A Master’s degree in education, social work, management or related field, with a minimum of ten years of experience in human service organizations, preferably a community based, multi-service setting. 

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to engage the community and its members including residents, commercial and not-for-profit institutions, funders, neighbors, and government officials.

• Commitment to the self-determination and leadership of low-income and of color youth and communities to address the systemic issues that challenge the routine achievement of a high quality of life. 

 • Cultural competence and sensitivity to the similarities and differences among the constituents we serve

 • A deep strategic and analytical thinker, comfortable and experienced with such tasks as needs assessment, data collection, analysis and planning.  A “Big picture” thinker including being able to practice active reflection, assess external conditions and provide leadership in collective process to refine strategic thinking.

 • A talented and experienced relationship builder with a diverse set of stakeholders including staff, Board, funders and practitioners.

 • Experience and ease working with diverse populations simultaneously, including community residents, corporate partners, staff, foundations and Center consumers. 

 • Substantial management experience, including hiring, supervision, leadership development and evaluation.

 • Experience and comfort with organization development, including the development of infrastructure (systems, structures, policies, procedures) and with marketing of an organization to its publics.  Significant experience developing and managing organizational budgets and fiscal oversight.

 • Proven success in grant writing and fundraising from foundations, corporations, individuals and government and an ability to increase our current level of support to build towards a longer-term support structure for LSNC

 • The interest and ability to grow the quantity and quality of services that the center provides

• The ability to adapt to new situations and an understanding of technologies and other innovation trends to serve the center and its members in the best possible way
