was faced with a $20 billion budget gap due to the weak economy. With the help
of stimulus dollars, a personal income tax surcharge on New Yorkers making over $250,000,
and new income tax reforms, that $20 billion budget gap has been reduced to a
little over $1.5 million. However, the ongoing weak economy, in addition to the
slow recovery, continues to undermine New York State’s efforts to restore those

Youth Serving City Agencies to Merge
By Karen Erdos - A merger of the city’s Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) into the Administration for Children’s Services (ACS), the city’s child welfare agencies was announced in Mayor Bloomberg’s State of the City address on Wednesday, January 20. This should lead to more community-based care for non-violent juvenile offenders allowing them to remain with their families and receive services in their communities designed to keep them connected with education and prevent recidivism. We applaud this decision that should improve outcomes for youth, families and public safety. Read more >>
CRE Participates in Capacity Building Event for Queens-based Nonprofits
On a day when most people are enjoying a holiday, City Council Member James Sanders, Jr. gathered nonprofit leaders in District 31 in Queens (Laurelton, Springfield Gardens, Rosedale and the Rockaways) to network and receive training on nonprofit management. Topics included starting a nonprofit, fundraising, planning and budgeting. CRE consultant Arnaldo Simo led a session on Contingency Planning and Budgeting for nonprofits with budgets of $1 million and greater. Read more >>
